Glycerin is a humectant, which is a type of moisturizing agent that works by drawing water into the skin from the air and deeper layers of the skin. Glycerin’s moisturizing mechanism also includes: Improving the skin’s ability to retain moisture: Glycerin helps the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of skin, retain moisture. Improving the skin’s structure: Glycerin improves the structure of the stratum corneum. Improving the skin’s barrier function: Glycerin improves the skin’s barrier function by modifying the water-binding properties of proteins and lipids in the stratum corneum. Protecting against irritants: Glycerin’s affinity for water protects the skin from irritants. Accelerating wound healing: Glycerin stored in the stratum corneum helps the skin retain moisture and heal wounds
