Diuretic regulation with Phyllanthus niruri Pain Management

Diuretic regulation with Phyllanthus niruri

Background:
Diuresis plays an important role in the prevention and management of urolithiasis by promoting urinary flow and facilitating the elimination of crystals and solutes. Phyllanthus niruri (Chanca Piedra) has been traditionally used for its antilithiatic and diuretic properties; however, experimental evidence supporting these effects remains limited.

Objective:
To evaluate the diuretic activity and sodium excretion-enhancing effects of aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts of Phyllanthus niruri in experimental animal models.

Methods:
Experimental studies were conducted in albino rats to assess the diuretic effects of P. niruri. Animals were administered aqueous or hydroalcoholic extracts of P. niruri at different doses and compared with vehicle control and the standard diuretic hydrochlorothiazide. Urine volume, urinary pH, and electrolyte excretion (sodium, potassium, and chloride) were measured over defined time intervals using metabolic cages. Acute toxicity studies were also performed to evaluate safety.

Results:
Administration of Phyllanthus niruri extracts produced a significant increase in urine volume compared with control animals (p < 0.05). The extract significantly enhanced urinary excretion of sodium, potassium, and chloride, with diuretic activity comparable to or exceeding that of hydrochlorothiazide. Urinary pH remained stable across treatment groups. Acute toxicity studies demonstrated no significant adverse effects at tested doses, indicating a favorable safety profile.

Conclusion:
Phyllanthus niruri exhibits significant diuretic and natriuretic activity in experimental animal models, supporting its traditional use in urinary stone management. By increasing urine output and electrolyte excretion without significant toxicity, P. niruri may contribute to the prevention and facilitation of urinary stone elimination.
